Fokke Baarssen began his career in tv journalism and has since then transitioned into fiction, documentary and commercial filmmaking. Whatever the medium, however, current events, engagement and realism have been recurring themes in his work.
Two years after having received his Bachelor’s degree in Art & Technology in 2010, Fokke directed his first short fiction film ‘De Raad’ to great acclaim. It won Best Debut and Best Scenario at the Eindhoven Film Festival.
Fokke co-produced the multi-award winning American documentary ‘Destressed’ in 2014.
In 2015 Fokke directed his first documentary in The Netherlands, ‘De Jeweetwels’. In this film, Fokke investigated the field of direct cinema. ‘De Jeweetwels’ premiered at the Garden State Film Festival (NJ, USA), where it won the award for Best International Short Documentary. In that same year Fokke wrote and directed the short film ‘Match’, which was selected for numerous film festivals in Europe and the United States.
Besides being a filmmaker, Fokke also works as a stage actor in his home country The Netherlands. In 2014 he performed a starring role in the successful play ‘Cirque de la Faim’, which premiered at the prestigious Oerol Festival and received a 5 star review from the Theaterkrant.
Fokke divides his time between directing, producing content for his production company Cosmic Visual and acting.
In 2010 Fokke founded his own production company Cosmic Visual. Cosmic Visual produces video content ranging from (short) documentaries, corporate films, teaser trailers, commercials and company animations. Keeping up with the latest technological changes in the film industry, Fokke both films and edits many of these highly diverse projects himself.
Long before picking up the camera and making films, Fokke could be found on the stage, working as a stage actor. Even though his focus has shifted toward making films, Fokke still enjoys acting on the stage. Fokke is a main cast member of The Young Ones, a theater group in Zwolle, The Netherlands. He also frequently works with Theatergroep De Jonge Honden, making site-specific theater.
“The combination of making films and acting in theater is wonderful. Both jobs truly complement each other. Being an actor makes me a better director.
I do not merely speak the language of an actor, acting is in my DNA.”
